Real-time reactions platform

React Labs is a flexible, highly scalable platform for real-time engagement and response measurement. Its core is a mobile app that lets users react to what they’re watching moment by moment, giving them a greater sense of engagement with what they’re watching, while simultaneously collecting temporally fine-grained, interpretable data about their responses.

Traditional polling provides interpretable data, but it can’t give you second-by-second information about people’s reactions and it doesn’t scale. Twitter analysis gets you (closer to) real time on a massive scale, but it’s wildly messy and it doesn’t let you choose the questions you want answered. Dial testing provides instantaneous reactions, but it’s small scale and expensive, and it only gives you one dimension of response. React Labs’ patent-pending technology brings together the best features of all these approaches.

About React Labs

The React Labs platform allows very large numbers of participants to register their moment-by-moment reactions to live and televised events and video, providing a highly engaging user experience and producing rich, detailed data for analysis. Beginning with our launch during the Fall 2012 presidential debates, we've gathered data for political scientists from thousands of students across the country, we've helped ABC7 and Politico create award winning political coverage, we've partnered with Frank N. Magid Associates, a top consumer-media research firm, to analyze reactions to Super Bowl advertising, and we've given the Washington Post a new way to engage their audience. We're also branching out into other use cases, including ad and video content testing.

React Labs LLC is an early stage startup, spun out from research at the University of Maryland by Philip Resnik, Ph.D with the help of the Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute and support from the Maryland Technology Development Corporation under the Maryland Innovation Initiative.

On May 17, 2015, Philip Resnik spoke at the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) 70th Annual Conference, on a panel entitled "Social Media Data Mining: Staying on the Cutting Edge".

On October 24, 2014, Philip Resnik spoke at the 2014 Public Opinion Quarterly (POQ) Special Issue Conference, discussing our POQ publication ``Real-Time Reactions to a 2012 Presidential Debate: A Method for Understanding Which Messages Matter'' (co-authored with Amber Boydstun, Rebecca Glazier, and Matt Pietryka).

On May 7, 2014, the Washington Post/React Labs Instant Reaction gave viewers a new way to experience the Maryland Democratic Gubernatorial Debate. Participants responded moment-by-moment, letting us know what they support and don’t support, what they believe and disbelieve. In addition to engaging debate viewers, this data helped guide the Post's debate coverage and will support Washington Post's Truth Teller project, designed for moment-by-moment fact checking in political discourse.

We were selected as one of the startups featured at the South by Southwest Interactive (SXSW) Startup Spotlight on March 7, 2014. We were also featured at the Austin TechBreakfast Kickoff Spectacular the same day, and we organized a well-received SXSW 2014 panel on real-time opinion gathering, with co-panelists Rana el Kaliouby of Affectiva, Martin Salo of Realeyes, and Gary Kazantsev of Bloomberg. The panel was featured on the front page of the SXSW Interactive site the day before SXSW opened.
